Responding to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Mass Shooting
Yesterday afternoon, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Broward county, Florida, experienced the most deadly school shooting since 2012’s Sandy Hook massacre.
Last year, Parkland was declared “The Safest City in Florida”.
The Green Party of Florida’s members have no desire to politicize this tragedy. Nonetheless, it is appropriate that we make a statement as we are a political party. We believe policy affects outcomes.
Floridians and Americans at large must ask ourselves a simple question. Do we care about these shootings? Do we care enough to act? Is 17 dead students enough for us to act, or to make our elected leaders act? Our current elected politicians do not care to act, and we all must make them.
The Green Party of Florida will not publicly offer thoughts and prayer, as these are simply obvious statements of facts. No American with access to television or internet can avoid thinking about this tragedy. No American with faith in the power of prayer is not praying for the victims, or for an end to this uniquely American scourge.
None of us yet has a sure solution to the problem of near-constant mass shootings, and school shooting, and random shooting plaguing our nation only. Nonetheless, Americans, on the whole, agree on several simple common-sense policies. Republicans, Democrats, Greens and other independent voters alike agree on the same policies that our well-funded politicians refuse to even consider. We believe you know what these policies are already. We believe that Floridians deserve, demand more than what our current leaders offer us.
The Green Party of Florida Coordinating Council will be having an emergency Conference Call tomorrow night the 16th of February at 8pm to discuss the issues of Gun Violence in the State of Florida including the rise in mass shootings, police shootings, and the “Stand Your Ground” law. We know that Floridians are looking for new ideas and real solutions to the issues of Gun Violence in our Communities, Schools, and Work Places and we are committed as a Party to finding and advancing those ideas and solutions.
